Diferentes agencias críticas de música y especializadas en el ambiente publican año a año su pretendiente y mejor álbum del año junto con una lista donde muestran los mejores lanzamientos en cuestión de calidad obviamente. Entre estas agencias la más reconocida en todo el mundo es la Rolling Stone pero existen muchas otras agencias que se dedican a esto como New Musical Express, Uncut, Mojo, Mixmag, Spin, MetalHammer y Kerrang! entre otras, siendo estas últimas dos solo especializadas en el ámbito del Rock y el Heavy Metal unicamente.
